Health Programs
Working to improve the health of Hondurans, young and old.
“We took our first medical brigade to Honduras in 1999 with about 30 volunteers.”
The mission trip usually occurs in July and lasts seven days including travel days. When in Honduras, we split into teams; as many as four teams go to different villages each day. In each village we set up clinics in whatever the villagers provide us, typically the local school, church, community center, or even outdoors. Over the course of the week, we will see on average 2000-2500 patients. Over the years we have expanded our health initiatives to include year round vitamin and anti-parasite supplementation to primary school children, and provision of water filters and proper hygiene education to women in the villages.
MEDICAL BRIGADE
Our medical mission trip is unique in that we go to the villages of El Paraiso, most located in the mountains. We travel in rented four-wheel drive trucks on dirt roads badly eroded by rains and sometimes impassable.
VITAMINS
This program is intended to improve the health of those most vulnerable, the children. Their diet consists mostly of starches, and so a multivitamin is essential for their proper growth and development. Teachers report better attendance and better health in those on this program.
WATER FILTERS
Since 2018 we have been collaborating with CareLink to provide water filters to families who live in the villages we serve. This initiative is being led by a local Honduran who has a passion for helping these families receive clean water.
GUARDIANES DE LA SALUD
Since 2007, Honduras Good Works has teamed with the Episcopal Deanery of Yuscaran, Honduras to train local lay Hondurans in first aid. These workers, from rural villages without healthcare, are called Guardianes de Salud or Health Guardians.
