Summary of Scholarship Progress for Honduras Good Works

Scholarship students in Rancho del Obispo

  • Broad Student Reach: HGW currently supports a large group of students. At our February 2025 visit we had 247 scholarship students enrolled in the program: 231 secondary students, 10 trade school students and 6 University students.

  • High Graduation Rate: The program boasts an impressive 97% graduation rate for its scholarship students.

  • Academic Success:  From our Spring 2025 visit we documented that:

    • 135 students in 7th-9th grade passed into the next grade level.

    • 96 students in 10th-12th grade passed.

    • 42 high school students and several post-high school students (university, nurse tech) graduated in November 2024.  (Their school year runs from February through November).

  • Expansion to Higher Education & Trades:

    • The program increased University scholarships to 12 in the fall of 2025.

    • We expanded technical/trade school scholarships to 16 in 2025, recognizing the strong desire for skills that can lead directly to employment. Fields of study include advanced farming, nursing, and automotive mechanics, among others.

  • Impact on the Community: The scholarships are transformative, enabling students in isolated, distant villages to overcome the high costs of transportation, uniforms, and supplies required for education beyond the 6th grade.  It is estimated that one-third of students would not attend school at all without this support, while the rest would attend but at a significant financial burden to their family.  About 1/3 said their family would go hungry in order for them to attend school without this program.

  • Financial Commitment: Due to inflation, HGW recently agreed to increase the annual scholarship amounts to $300 a year for secondary school, $600 for trade school and $1,000 for university students. These are partial scholarships.  For example, a donation of $300 covers about 40% of a secondary student's annual education cost, with the family contributing the rest.

  • Update:   Selvin Davila is a Honduran graduate of our program and is now an enthusiastic volunteer and a HGW board member.  This year he has diligently created a database and has contacted all our students to register them into the database. This is a huge improvement for the committee, who will be able to follow each student’s progress more easily, and be able to contact the students more directly.  We are very grateful for Selvin’s assistance in this endeavor.

  • The next scholarship trip will be January 15-19, 2026.  There is room for volunteers with an interest in the program to join us!  Contact us at info@hondurasgoodworks.org if you are interested.
