One Good Turn
One Good Turn is back from our Needs Assessment in Honduras - and we already can’t wait to return for a large scale medical education project! During our 5 days in Yuscarán, we visited three communities in the surrounding mountains. There, we spoke with six Guardianes de Salud. Many of them have been providing care and consultation for their neighbors for decades! We were invited into their churches and homes, heard stories of their patients, and explored their role within the community. We also hosted a Medical Education Review Course. 17 Guardianes from surrounding communities traveled to Yuscarán to reconnect with one another and refresh their skills - what dedication! This was their first large gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic began. We’re honored to have brought the team together, where we demonstrated and reviewed blood pressure measurement, and shared written protocols on diarrhea, fevers, and wound care. Each Guardiane received a digital thermometer, a flashlight (the most important tool in medicine!), and a bottle of Zinc tablets (used along with a rehydration solution to lessen diarrhea in children). Upon return, we will cover each of the above topics in more detail, and add first aid, vital signs, and patient record keeping. This will be a multi-day education session, where we hope to see patients alongside Guardianes to observe their best practices! We'll keep you updated as we move forward with the Guardianes de Salud!
