HONDURAS GOOD WORKS MEDICAL MISSION TRIP

This is one of a series of newsletters intended to assist with your participation in Honduras Good Works Medical Mission Trip. Please make sure you have read previous newsletters and be on the lookout for upcoming newsletters. (Click here to access previous newsletters).

APRIL 2019 NEWSLETTER

At this point, you have registered for the medical mission trip in July (applications closed April 1). You should also be in the process of obtaining or updating your passport. Your passport must be good through January 2020. Make sure you are receiving the proper immunizations as discussed with your primary care provider.

As per the payment schedule, your $200 deposit was made by April 1; another $800 is due by May 15, 2019, and the balance of $1000 is due June 15, 2019. If you wish you may pay the full balance anytime. On April 1, seats without the $200 deposit were released. If you have to cancel after April 1, the $200 deposit will not be refundable, due to airline fees. Some of you have asked for a breakdown of the expenses of this trip, which follows here:

$1020 Airfare, baggage fees, travel insurance, travel agency fee, and Honduran missionary fee.
$620 Room, board, lunches, fiesta. This also covers this expense for the Honduran volunteers.
$185 Trucks and bus rental, gas, and tips at airport.
$176 U-Haul rental for transport of crates in US: $425. Office supplies related to mission trip, background checks, storage unit for supplies: $2800 annually. Purchase of medicines in Honduras: $4000.
TOTAL Expenses shared by brigade members
$2001 Per volunteer

** Not covered by volunteers is approximately $17,000 in other expenses, and admin and general expenses, which is about 15%. This is covered by HGW through grants and fund raising.

The board of directors has agreed not to increase the price of the trip over $2000, but to fund raise to make up any shortfall. In years past we have strived to make the medical mission trip be self-funding, but as our model has changed over the past few years, this has not continued to be the case. We have had less people from the US, and more Honduran volunteers join us, but we love the model of helping the Hondurans help their own!

Packing parties
At the next packing party we will discuss how we bag our medication/supplies, when baggage tags will be available for you and why we will need to use at least one of YOUR checked bags. Please invite your friends to come with you to the packing parties. We need as many hands as possible to get all this work done! It’s a fun, social time, and a great way for people to give towards the mission trip without leaving Texas!

Our next packing party will be April 27, 2019, 9am to 3pm at St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal Church, 5600 RR 620 N., Austin, Texas. Lunch will be provided. Feel free to bring snacks to share with others.

The packing party on May 4, 2019, 9am to 3pm will be at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 2800 Trimmier Road, Killeen, Texas. Lunch will be provided. Feel free to bring snacks to share with others.

Further packing parties will be announced thereafter.

What to pack
You will be able to carry on one airline approved bag and check one bag for your personal items. There will be a second checked bag with your name that is used by Honduras Good Works to carry supplies and medications. If you do not need to use your personal checked bag, please let us know as soon as possible so we can have another bag of supplies ready to be checked in your name.

When thinking about your packing list, keep in mind that you need to dress modestly, nothing too short or revealing, as we are guests and representatives to the Hondurans. Pants and capris are appropriate for the field. Comfortable walking shoes are a must since the terrain in many of the villages we visit is rough and uneven. Many people pack gently used clothes/shoes that can be left and donated at the end of the trip.

We usually have the ability to have clothes washed one time, depending on the weather. This may help with your packing in case you want to wear a couple of items twice.

Remember, you will have the team T-shirt to wear to and from the airport and on picture day. Team T-shirts will be provided at the last packing party or at the airport on the day of travel.

Towels are not provided, so plan on bringing your own. Some people choose to donate their towel at the end of the trip.

You will also want to pack soap, shampoo and bug spray. In the evenings at the center you may want to dress more comfortably but again please keep in mind that we are guests of the nuns and will want to be respectful.

Pack for a weeks’ stay in a temperate climate. Honduras is temperate year round. While we are there, you can normally expect daytime temperature to reach 80-85, occasionally to 90. Nighttime will cool down to 75 or below after midnight. In the summer, the rainy season starts. Some prefer to bring a poncho and/or a light jacket. Nights can be cool but not cold.

Everything (meals, transportation, lodging) will be provided for you, but if you would like to buy extra snacks/gifts, bring spending money.

IMPORTANT: Pack a towel and refillable water bottle! These two items are the most commonly missed and they are a must!
