FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

This year’s mission trip is July 12-19, 2018. You can register and make payments online at hondurasgoodworks.org.

The cost to our volunteers for participation in the Medical Brigade is $2000. If you can not pay the full amount by April 6 (last day of registration) you may make three payments using the following schedule; $667 (due April 15), $667 (due May 15), and $666 (due June 15).

Due to airline ticketing rules, we need a $200 deposit (non-refundable) by April 6. On April 6 we will release any seats that have not paid the $200 deposit. The balance of the first payment ($467) will be due April 15. If you wish you may pay the full balance anytime.

** If for some reason a volunteer’s application is not approved, their deposit will be refunded.

The trip amount includes airfare, lodging and meals.

An important step is to check your passport expiration date. It must be good until January 2019. Please renew if needed.

 

Immunizations/Prevention
Ask your personal health care provider about immunizations and prevention for mosquito borne illnesses. He/she is the best judge of any special requirements you might have. General minimum recommendations are: Diphtheria- tetanus booster (if you haven’t had one in the past five years), completion of the Polio series in childhood, Hepatitis A vaccination. (Be sure and start this at least two weeks prior to the trip. The initial injection should be followed by a booster 6-18 months later for maximum effectiveness.)

Malaria is present to Honduras. It isn’t rampant, but is prevalent enough that, in the past 18 years of our groups going to this area, there have been one or two cases among the mission workers. The risk for malaria is very small, but no one can say it is zero. For those who decide that they want prophylaxis against malaria, we recommend prophylaxis with Aralen tablets. This medication is taken one tablet a week, starting two weeks before departure and continuing for four weeks after return. This medicine is expensive. Talk it over with your physician if you have any questions. If you decide to take it, we can provide it for you.

All prescription medication for personal use must be in a properly labeled, currently dated prescription bottle. In case any one gets ill while we are in Honduras, there will be a supply of medication carried specifically for the mission workers.

 

Official Documentation for Medical Providers and Drivers
Those of you who have agreed to drive while in Honduras (you must know how to drive a standard transmission vehicle) must download a copy of your driver’s license using our Document Upload page.

If you are a medical provider for the trip, we will need a copy of your diplomas and license to practice. These can also be downloaded using the Document Upload page.

 

Packing party dates
Medication is donated and purchased in bulk and separated into individual packages at the packing parties. Volunteers, such as yourself and friends and family, meet on several dates before the medical mission trip to prepare all medical supplies/medication for the mission trip.

  • The first packing party will be at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 2800 Trimmier Rd, Killeen, TX on March 10, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
  • The second packing party will be at St. Richard’s Episcopal Church, 1420 E. Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, TX on March 17, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feel free to bring snacks to share with others.

Future packing party dates will be announced when they are scheduled.
