I am so sorry to report that due to the unrest that is ongoing in the streets in Tegucigalpa, the Board of Directors of Honduras Good Works has decided to cancel the brigade scheduled for this July. We are aware that several other medical brigades have cancelled. Unlike previous protests which died down quickly, the current protests have been ongoing for over a month; the level of violence is also unlike that of previous protests. While we do not have any concerns about our travel while out in the villages, we do not feel confident that we can safely maneuver this large group in and out of the airport in Tegucigalpa.
Over the next several days we will be ascertaining what refunds can be made and will be getting that information to you as soon as possible. We are going to be checking with our travel agent about the already purchased airline tickets. Please be patient with us as we sort this out. You may review our refund policy HERE.
We are currently exploring whether to send a small group of brigadiers and board members down to carry our already packed and ready to go meds to the Honduran doctors and dentists who volunteered to work with us, so that they can provide these meds to the small villages, who need our help, and who are not responsible for this violence.
This decision was not taken lightly. Over the last 2 weeks we have been in frequent communication with our partners in Honduras; we have kept abreast of information put out by the US embassy in Tegucigalpa, and we have been in constant prayer. Our hearts still want to go, our brains say this is not the time to take a large team. I am so sorry.
I do hope all of you will continue to support our work in Honduras. Of the last 19 years, we have had to cancel only one trip previously, and that was 10 years ago, associated with the coup that occurred at that time and caused a lot of unrest. We hope and pray for Honduras, that peace will come, and we can resume our medical brigades. In the meantime, we will be raising much needed funds to continue our support of the 225+ kids we have in our scholarship program–so they can get an education beyond the 6th grade and be part of the change for their country.
Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this further, but we will be in touch as soon as we know about your refunds/tickets etc.
